Today someone told me they could tell I was from Michigan. It was probably one of the biggest compliments I could get. He said my mannerisms, they way I talked and acted.
As I’ve moved away, I’ve become more and more proud of where I come from. Michigan’s economy is changing, but a lot of people are doing their best to change with it. There’s a lot of people who believe in Detroit, in Michigan, and in their neighbors and friends.
So here’s a shout out to the mitten. Over 100 years ago, my family moved there to be miners in the UP. From there they migrated to Flint and worked for GM in the auto plants.
Michigan has my college, my seasons, and the first 22 years of my life. It isn’t always beautiful, and in the winter the white snow easily turns brown and ugly from the passing cars.
Thanks for making me what I am, Michigan. No matter where I go, I promise not to forget where I come from.

I remember meeting girls from Georgia who said, “Y’all talk like you’re from England.”
